Shanny signing with the Flyers? November 4, 2008

From Spectors Hockey:

TSN.CA: Bob McKenzie reports a lot more lines are dropping into the UFA pool in hopes of landing Mats Sundin and Brendan Shanahan. Of the two McKenzie believes Shanahan could be the first to sign, noting the St. Louis Blues have contacted the Shanahan camp while sources claim the Philadelphia Flyers management met with the veteran winger. The New Jersey Devils aren’t believed to have interest while the NY Islanders aren’t considered an option because they’re a rebuilding club.

PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER: Sam Carchidi reports Shanahan did indeed have “a lengthy discussion” yesterday with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren although the latter cautioned the talks were exploratory at this point.

I think Shanahan would be a good fit with the Flyers given his style of play, but do the Flyers really need another forward right now? This move only makes sense if Holmgren trades some forward depth for some blue line help.

It was nice to hear Don Cherry offer a defence of Sidney Crosby tonight on Hockey Night in Canada after the nonsense that the Capitals’ Alexander Semin spouted a few days ago

It was rather amazing, actually, to see just how widely circulated the Puck Daddy interview was with very, very little in the way of criticism going Semin’s way.

Since when is a player’s value determined by “the way he moves?”

Here’s a good comparison based on the counting numbers: Semin’s three and a half years older than Crosby, has played 23 fewer NHL games, scored 20 fewer goals, 136 fewer assists and 156 fewer points. Semin was minus-18 in 63 games last season, still gets somewhat sheltered against top opposition and while he’s had a terrific start to the season offensively, he’s still getting lit up by the opposition.

Not to mention Crosby’s Art Ross, Lester B. Pearson and Hart trophies, and an absolutely incredible performance during last year’s postseason run to the finals.

And as far as I’m concerned, Crosby has one more thing Semin has yet to get a handle on.

Class.

James Mirtle always seems to have the right view on everything to do with hockey, except now. Just kidding, now too. Semin is an idiot for talking about Crosby like this, and personally, I think Crosby is miles ahead of Semin, Ovechkin, and Malkin.

Although, everyone has to love the rivalry brewing between the two teams:

Ovechkin vs. Malkin : Crosby vs. Semin

Alexander Semin on Sidney Crosby:

What’s so special about [Crosby]? I don’t see anything special there. Yes, he does skate well, has a good head, good pass. But there’s nothing else.

Pretty harsh Alexander, although I’d be pissed off if my last name was Semin too.

Alberta’s solicitor general argued today that stun guns are valuable police tools that save lives.

His comments come in the wake of the death Trevor Grimolfson, the 38-year-old owner of Big Daddy’s tattoo shop who died Wednesday after police jolted him in an attempt to end his violent rampage.

“I believe the Taser is a tool that’s been used very effectively and, in a lot of cases, have prevented death,” Fred Lindsay said. “I haven’t seen a lot of evidence yet come forward that confirms at the end of the investigation that (a death) was caused by … the Taser.” Full Story

This is the second time I’ve heard of someone dying because of a taser. Your telling me that mace is not effective? There has to be a better alternative than these tasers, or these people who break norms (not laws) will be wiped off the face of the planet.

With the team desperate for a win, Mike Richards showed why he is the Philadelphia Flyers’ captain.

Richards had a career-high four assists and the Flyers became the last NHL team to break into the victory column this season with a 6-3 decision over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night.

”He was our leader tonight. It was a great effort from our captain,” Flyers coach John Stevens said after Philadelphia (1-3-3) ended a six-game victory drought in a city where it usually struggles.

Not only did the Flyers win, they did it just hours after learning star centre Daniel Briere would be sidelined up to a month with a torn abdominal muscle that will have to be surgically repaired.

”It was a good night, first win of the year and we played well,” said Richards, whose previous high was three assists. ”I know I said this a lot lately, we deserved to win tonight. We played a good game right from the get-go and we finished the game.” Full Story

Its about time.

After a career night against the Panthers last night, Mikko Koivu is on pace for 37 goals, 219 assists, and 246 points.

If he manages 219 assists, I guess that means we will have a first time President’s trophy winner this year.

I love reading hockey blogs, and my favorite is one that most people would probably have in their top ten, but would not rank it as high as James Mirtle or Off Wing Opinion, but I think Puck Updateis the most entertaining hockey blog out their purely based on author Steven Ovadia’s brilliant titles.

Recent line of brilliance:

“Blackhawks win with wrong goalie”

Maybe its just me, but his titles always crack me up.
