Veteran NHL defenceman Bryan Berard will attempt to make an NHL club on a tryout contract, after being invited to training camp with the Philadelphia Flyers.

“Bryan has been around a number of years now (and) he has been a good defenceman for quite some time,” said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. “I’m excited about Bryan’s willingness to come here on a tryout. It will certainly pick up the competition level of what is going to take place in training camp.” Full Story

Whats the harm? If he bombs his tryout, its no loss to us, but if he is viewed as an improvement to someone who is on the main roster, its just an added bonus.

All summer I have been avoiding blogging, not because I don’t want to, but because I have been content with life without it, and I just wasn’t feeling the blogging buzz. Lately I’ve been in the mood to talk some hockey, but I chose the worst part of the year to do so.

I also wanted to make note of the fact that all my buttons for blog linking sites were gone when I switched to a one-column theme, and now I am to lazy to go retrieve all the codes. Hopefully I won’t be here much longer, because I have applied to SBNation.com to write about my beloved Flyers, but don’t get to upset, I still have some plans for this blog should they take me as a writer.

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren on Tuesday spoke with Comcast SportsNet regarding unrestricted free agent center Mats Sundin. Sundin, who has spent the last 13 seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, has yet to decide if he will continue his stellar career.

“Obviously a player of Mats Sundin’s stature…he’s been a tremendous player for a long time,” said Holmgren. “He’s a free agent, and we’ve made inquiries as to his status. We don’t know whether he’s going to play or not. I think Mats is still trying to decide that in his own timeframe. But, if he wants to play, we’d certainly have an interest in seeing if we could fit him in.”

Fitting Sundin in under the salary cap would be the tricky part for Holmgren, should it come to that. The general manager did say, however, that he would not mortgage the future for a short term addition.

“We wouldn’t want to do anything to disrupt our long term plans here,” he said. “Other than kicking the tires and sticking our toe in the water, that’s all we’re doing right now. Full Story

This would be a bad move. There is no way that we would be able to get Sundin without dumping someone like Joffrey Lupul or Jeff Carter, both of whom I would never trade away just to have Mats Sundin for a year or two.

To justify why I don’t want him even more, we have Daniel Briere, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, and Glen Metropolit down who share the same position as Mats. Richards and Carter need to log a fair bit of time this year too, so that they can evolve into their roles with the team sooner than later.

Please, don’t do it Paul.

The Columbus Blue Jackets got some shocking news on Tuesday when they learned that prospect Stefan Legein has decided to quit playing hockey.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, the Blue Jackets were informed of Legein’s decision by his agent Doug Woods, telling them he won’t be at training camp and has decided to hang up his skates at the age of 19. Full Story

Why would you do this? Because its Columbus? Do you have a problem with getting large sums of money for participating in a pass time? I wish the Blue Jackets wanted me on their team, I wouldn’t say no.
